Veronica Herbert was born and educated in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. She gave up her teaching career after the birth of her twin sons and became a professional artist. Her passion has always been painting and drawing, even as a child. She has a great love for our wildlife and wild spaces and draws inspiration from our natural world. South Africa is richly blessed with an incredible array of birds, fauna and natural places. The Natal Drakensberg is a never-ending source of inspiration and restoration for Veronica.
She is competent in all art mediums and uses watercolour, gouache, pastel, oil or acrylic with equal ease. Many of her bird studies are painted on handmade paper. She makes the paper using natural plant fibres such as river reeds and papyrus. The paper has a beautiful texture and colour which suits the wildlife paintings. Her bird studies are executed in fine detail but she prefers a more impressionistic style for her landscapes and flowers.
Veronica specialises in detailed bird studies. She has been exploring the “secret world” of birds in her latest paintings including their habitat and favourite haunts. She paints landscapes in oil or acrylic emphasising the impasto nature of the paint to give an impression of the landscape and the mood and atmosphere of the sky. Infinite horizons, threatening storms and the rich colours of autumn and winter are favourite themes in her paintings. She captures a sense of peace and calm in her landscapes but at the same time has intense colours and interest on every canvas.
She has her own fine art gallery in Pietermaritzburg called “Art on Victoria” with her work on permanent display.
